Alternanthera littoralis, commonly called Joseph’s Coat, is native to Brazil’s coastal regions and has a long history of use in treating microbial infections and parasitic diseases.

A research conducted by scientists from the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD), the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and São Paulo State University (UNESP) has found evidence showing support of medicinal properties of Joseph’s Coat plant (Alternanthera littoralis).

The Journal of Ethnopharmacology shows that the Joseph's Coat plant possesses the ability to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and provide anti-arthritis effects.

The work first started with the plant's aerial parts and chemical studies to determine what bioactive components may be present, with this step spearheaded by UNICAMP pharmacist Marcos Salvador. The project then progressed to the biological portion of the tests, with UFGD's pharmacologist Cândida Kassuya overseeing the evaluation of the extract's effects using different laboratory models of arthritis.

The tests showed that the ethanolic extract of A. littoralis diminished inflammation in test animals. The treatment resulted in less swelling and improved functioning of the joints, along with alterations to the inflammatory mediators. As described by UNESP's Associate Professor, Arielle Cristina Arena, the findings indicate the presence of antioxidant effects and protection in the tissues of the joints, likely helping to counteract the harmful effects from inflammation, arthritis in particular.

Therapeutic amounts from the extract were found safe in preclinical tests, and Arena also oversaw the remaining toxicological tests.

The results showed that the ethanolic extract of A. littoralis significantly reduces inflammation in laboratory animals. “In the experimental models, we observed reduced edema, improved joint parameters, and modulation of inflammatory mediators, suggesting antioxidant and tissue-protective actions,” says Arena.

According to Arena, the findings showed strong support in the plant’s medicinal potential and established a solid scientific basis for future preclinical research and the possible development of herbal products.
