  • Tight clothes can impair blood flow and worsen varicose veins.
  • Deep sock marks and swollen ankles may signal poor circulation.
  • Compression stockings are safe, unlike random tight clothing.

When it comes to health, there’s hardly ever any thought given to the idea that our clothes could pose a risk. In his new post on Instagram, Gujarat-based vascular surgeon Dr Sumit Kapadia explained how tightly fitted clothing could impact your blood circulation.

“If your circulation is poor, check your wardrobe. It sounds dramatic, but I’ve seen this more often than you’d expect,” he wrote The culprits are most often: tight jeans, shape wear worn all day, elastic socks that leave deep marks, shoes that compress the toes and ankles.

Those wondering what happens when they wear highly fitted clothing or footwear, Dr Kapadia explained that it constantly compresses the legs, groin, or ankles, causing problems such as impaired venous return, increased swelling in the lower limbs, worsened varicose vein symptoms, aggravated nerve irritation, and reduced comfort during long standing hours.

While the heart has a pump for circulation, veins don’t have anything for support and depend on muscle movement and open pathways to move blood upward. Constant pressure in the wrong areas can slow this process down. So it’s important to understand the need for comfortable clothes that do not restrict movement.

Dr Kapadia added, “Medical-grade compression stockings are different. They are scientifically designed with graduated pressure. Random tight clothing is not therapy. It’s pressure without purpose.”

People with conditions such as varicose veins, leg swelling, diabetes, sedentary jobs, or professions that require long hours of standing shouldn’t take their clothing choices lightly. What they wear can make a difference to their health. When you wear tight clothes, your body gives signals in the form of deep sock marks, evening heaviness, and swollen ankles.

Dr Kapadia warned that these signals shouldn’t be ignored. “Circulation problems don’t always begin inside the artery. Sometimes they begin with lifestyle patterns. Take a look at what you’re wearing daily. Is it supporting your circulation or silently compressing it?”
