  • Suppressing emotions can harm mental and physical health, says Dr Grover
  • Unspoken feelings may cause fatigue, mood swings, and stress-related illnesses
  • Journaling, mindfulness, and open talks help release and manage emotions

In the bustle of modern living, somewhere between hectic work culture, polite smiles and small talk, emotions often go missing. Or rather, they stay hidden. These are the unspoken emotions; the anger swallowed to keep the peace, the sadness masked with routine, the joy dimmed for fear of standing out. Psychologists call it emotional suppression that has negative impact on your health.

Unspoken emotions are feelings we experience internally but never express outwardly. They may stem from sadness, frustration, anxiety, excitement or even love. Social conditioning plays a big role. Many people are taught early on that expressing emotion is a sign of weakness or inconvenience.

According to Dr Sumit Grover, Clinical Psychologist, New York and London, people often silence their emotions to avoid judgement or conflict. “But emotions don’t disappear just because we ignore them. They wait.”

When emotions remain unexpressed, says Dr Grover, they accumulate like unopened letters. “Gradually, this emotional backlog shows up in daily life.” A person may wake up tired despite adequate sleep, feel irritated over minor issues, or withdraw socially without knowing why. “Suppressed emotions increase internal stress levels, which directly affect concentration, energy and motivation,” explains Dr. Grover. “Work performance dips, relationships strain, and even simple tasks begin to feel overwhelming.”

The psychological toll is often the first sign. Anxiety, mood swings and depression are common companions of bottled-up feelings. “Repressed anger may surface as irritability, while unexpressed grief can lead to emotional numbness.” Dr Grover informs, adding, “Physical health isn’t spared either. Stress-related headaches, digestive issues and high blood pressure frequently trace back to emotional suppression.” The body becomes the spokesperson when the mind refuses to speak.

  • Frequent fatigue without clear reason
  • Sudden mood changes or irritability
  • Withdrawing from social interactions
  • Difficulty communicating needs
  • Recurring physical complaints linked to stress

Learning the language of feelings

The antidote, says Dr Grover, lies in awareness and expression. “Journaling, mindfulness and open conversations create emotional release valves.” Confiding in a trusted friend or mental health professional can shift emotional weight. “Expressing emotions doesn’t mean losing control,” she adds. “It means understanding yourself better and building emotional resilience.”

Unspoken emotions are part of being human, but living permanently in silence comes at a cost. As per Dr Grover when we learn to recognise and voice what we feel, we reclaim balance, connection and health. “After all, emotions speak whether we let them or not, the real choice is how loudly they have to shout.”
