Decisions by celebrities about how to care for their children fuel health conversations. Genelia D'Souza's revelation that she restricts ghee intake in her kids diet led to a debate among parents. A senior physician explains why ghee can be vital for growth and overall health of children.

Actor and mother Genelia D'Souza has revealed that she makes sure to limit the intake of ghee for her kids on a day-to-day basis, preferring moderation and balance when it comes to nutrition. Although her discussion is in line with increasing education about healthy eating and calorie regulation, it has also ignited a debate among parents and nutritionists. Ghee, a staple of Indian tradition, has long been linked to strength, immunity and digestive vitality. But in today’s world, and with a little misinformation thrown into the mix, people are either using it too much — or not at all.

Ghee isn’t unhealthy, says Dr Kunal Khanna, Delhi-based senior nutrition physician and preventive health specialist, but the portion size that people consume and lack of understanding on its usage is what leads to unhealthy outcomes.

“Ghee is one of the most natural forms of healthy fat and a rich source of fat-soluble vitamins and growth nutrients at an important stage for development in children,” he says. Completely avoiding it may cause nutritional deficiencies, especially in children.

Rather than cutting out ghee, parents should pay attention to the inclusion of foodstuffs in moderation. Knowing its health benefits, can help families make healthy and informed decisions when it comes to consumption.

Supports Healthy Brain Development

Ghee is also a good source of healthy fats, very important for brain development in children. These are fats that nourish nerve function, memory and concentration. Moderate consumption of ghee is good for developing brains and aids them in functioning optimally, especially during the days when you are learning things for the first time and also during school-going years.

Improves Digestion and Gut Health

Ghee is rich in digestive enzymes and helps to ensure that nutrients from foods are well-absorbed by the body. It has the benefit of reducing acidity, bloating and constipation in kids. Dr. Khanna adds that this helps warm meals, making digestion better while also enhancing the absorption of nutrients from vegetables, grains and lentils.

Strengthens Immunity Naturally

Loaded with antioxidants and vitamins A, D, E and K, ghee aids in boosting the immune system. “Children who consume ghee in moderation are found to have a better resistance to common infections, seasonal flu and frequent colds as it strengthens the immune capacity in children,” Dr. Khanna says.

Aids Bone Growth and Strength

Ghee provides with vitamin K, which is essential for the absorption of calcium and its deposition in bones. This is important for growing years, as it helps to build strong bones and teeth. Ghee, when taken with calcium-rich foods such as milk and curd, also helps support the skeletal development.

Provides Long-Lasting Energy

Ghee is the antithesis to sugar-filled sweets, ghee offers long range energy so kids stay energized children bounce all day. Ghee is a way to avoid those sudden low energy falls and oils are the best alternatives as children consume them during school hours, outdoor games etc.

Promotes Healthy Skin and Overall Growth

Ghee nurtures the body on a cellular level by promoting healthy skin, hair and tissue growth. When had in the right quantity, ghee aids in keeping a person fit and fine,” Dr Khanna further adds, stating that “for those watching their weight”, if you include forms of saturated fats like processed junk food, it has unhealthy fat.

Ghee is not the enemy — excess of anything is. Add one to two teaspoons daily (depending on age and activity levels) to support children’s health without causing weight gain.
