Spring is considered a beautiful time of the year, as the weather is more pleasant and flowers begin to bloom. But when it comes to skin health, it sometimes doesn’t respond positively to the shift and reacts unexpectedly.
If you experience redness, itching, acne, eczema patches, or puffy eyes in spring, it is not random. Dietitian Deepta Nagpal shared that the skin becomes more reactive in March due to the shift in weather. “Pollen rises, temperatures fluctuate, humidity changes, and your immune system becomes more active,” she said.
This has a specific cause. “When pollen enters the body, immune cells release histamine as a defense response. Histamine increases inflammation, dilates blood vessels, and makes skin more sensitive,” she explained.
Hence, you notice certain changes in your skin, including redness and flushing, itching or hives, eczema or psoriasis flare-ups, puffy eyes and dark circles, acne worsening, and dryness or barrier damage.
People who suffer from these symptoms should take care of their diet, as certain foods worsen flare-ups. Her list included fermented and aged foods, leftover or stored foods, processed and packaged foods, tomatoes and spinach (especially for those who are sensitive), excess citrus, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and deep fried foods.

On the other hand, she recommended increasing intake of foods that can help calm and support your skin health. These include vitamin C-rich foods such as kiwis, oranges, and lemons, which provide natural antihistamine support. Even apples, onions, and green tea contain quercetin that helps control histamine release.
Other than that, leafy greens, colourful vegetables, spices, like turmeric and ginger, nuts, and seeds are also known to be beneficial. Additionally, Deepta said, “Support your gut with curd or yogurt, adequate fibre, proper hydration, regular meal timings.”
Even simple lifestyle changes can help a great deal like washing off pollen after outdoor exposure, changing clothes after coming home, avoiding hot showers, using fragrance-free skincare, and moisturising consistently. “Your skin doesn’t need harsh treatments right now. It needs seasonal support, balance, and gentle care,” she concluded.

Q. Why does skin need special care during spring?
Spring brings changes in temperature, humidity and pollen levels, which can affect the skin. These changes may lead to dryness, irritation or breakouts if proper care is not taken.
Q. Can seasonal allergies affect the skin?
Yes. Spring allergies may trigger skin issues such as itching, redness, rashes and sensitivity due to exposure to pollen and other allergens.
Q. Why is sunscreen important in spring?
Even though temperatures may feel mild, harmful UV rays are still present. Using sunscreen helps protect the skin from sun damage and conditions like Sunburn.
Q. Should skincare routines change in spring?
Yes. Many people switch to lighter moisturisers and gentler cleansers as humidity increases and the weather becomes warmer.
Q. How can people prevent spring breakouts?
Regular cleansing, avoiding heavy products, keeping the skin hydrated and removing sweat and dirt can help prevent clogged pores.
