  • Food label terms like BBE, IQF, HPP, and FD reveal food quality
  • BBE ensures freshness, IQF improves texture, HPP retains nutrients
  • FD on labels means longer shelf life and preserved taste

While food shopping, most of us treat food labels like fine print meant to be ignored. A quick glance at price, flavour, brand name, and straight into the trolley it goes. But those tiny abbreviations tucked away on the back of the pack? They quietly reveal how fresh your food is, how it was processed, and whether it’s actually worth your money.

Understanding terms like BBE, IQF, HPP, and FD helps you make choices that are fresher, safer, and better suited to your lifestyle. As Dr Manika Singh, Nutritional Consultant at Godrej Industries Group, explains, “Most of us just grab stuff off the supermarket shelves without really reading the label. We just look at the price, the flavor, the brand, and then move on. But food packs have these little abbreviations that say a lot about the quality, how fresh it is, and how it was handled before it got to you. These signs are easy to miss, but they help you pick better and safer food.”

So next time you’re shopping, pause for a second and look out for these key label terms

BBE: Best Before End

BBE is often confused with an expiry date, but it’s not quite the same thing — “Best Before End” refers to quality rather than safety. It tells you how long the product will retain its original taste, texture, and freshness when stored correctly. That packet of biscuits might still be safe to eat after the BBE date, but it won’t taste as good as it should. For pantry staples, snacks, and packaged foods, checking the BBE helps you avoid items that are technically edible but past their prime.

IQF: Individually Quick Frozen

Frozen food gets a bad rap, largely because many people don’t know how it’s processed. According to a report, 85% of Indians don’t know what IQF means. IQF stands for Individually Quick Frozen, a process where each piece of food is frozen separately at very low temperatures. This prevents clumping, locks in moisture, and preserves the natural bite and flavour. It also means you can use exactly how much you need, without defrosting a solid block. When you see IQF on a label, it’s a sign of better texture, even cooking, and higher quality frozen food.

HPP: High-Pressure Processing

If you enjoy fresh juices, dips, or ready-to-eat meals, HPP is a term worth knowing. High-Pressure Processing uses intense pressure instead of heat to eliminate harmful bacteria. The food stays closer to its natural state as nutrients, flavour, and texture are better preserved. HPP-labelled products often have a longer shelf life without relying on chemical preservatives, making them a cleaner and safer option for everyday consumption.

FD: Freeze-Dried

FD, or freeze-dried, is commonly seen on fruits, instant coffee, toppings, and snack foods. Unlike air-drying, freeze-drying removes moisture while maintaining the food’s colour, taste, and nutritional value. The result is a product that lasts longer and tastes fresher when rehydrated or consumed. If you’re looking for convenience without compromising too much on quality, FD is a good sign to spot on the label.
