Cure for bad breath: Understanding the link between food choices and halitosis

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a common concern that affects many individuals and can be quite embarrassing. Alcohol, garlic, onion and sugar are some common culprits of bad breath. Let's explore some remedies and prevention of it.

Inadequate oral hygiene is a well-known cause of bad breath. Also, certain dietary choices can also significantly contribute to this issue. Understanding the correlation between food selections and halitosis, as well as effective remedies, is essential for effectively managing this condition.

Common culprits of bad breath:

Tea and coffee:

Both tea and coffee possess properties that can lead to mouth dryness, reducing saliva production and fostering the growth of odour-causing bacteria. Despite their widespread consumption, excessive intake of these beverages can elevate the risk of developing bad breath. To counteract mouth dryness, it's advisable to accompany tea or coffee consumption with a glass of water to rinse the mouth and restore moisture levels, says Noida-based dentist Neha Verma, also the founder of DenDone.

Alcohol:

Alcohol, containing high levels of sulphites, can contribute to mouth dehydration, creating an environment conducive to the proliferation of harmful bacteria, says Verma. Limiting alcohol consumption and ensuring adequate hydration with water can help mitigate its adverse effects on breath freshness.

Garlic and onions:

These flavorful ingredients contain sulfur compounds that linger in the mouth, contributing to unpleasant breath odours. According to Verma, even after thorough oral cleaning, the pungent aroma of garlic and onions can persist due to their ability to enter the bloodstream and be exhaled through the lungs.

Canned fish:

Canned fish undergoes oxidation, resulting in the formation of malodorous compounds that cling to the mouth. Despite their convenience, opting for canned fish as a lunch option can exacerbate bad breath.

Sugar:

Sugar acts as a primary fuel for bacteria associated with bad breath, promoting their growth in the oral cavity. Choosing sugar-free gum can help maintain mouth moisture and prevent feeding harmful bacteria.

Acidic foods:

Highly acidic fruits and vegetables create an environment favorable for bacterial proliferation, leading to halitosis. While these foods offer nutritional benefits, acidic options like tomatoes and grapes can adversely affect oral health.

Remedies and prevention:

Incorporate breath-freshening foods and habits into your routine:

  • Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables to promote saliva production and combat bacterial growth.
  • Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva flow and maintain mouth moisture.
  • Include natural breath fresheners like parsley, cinnamon, cloves, and anise seeds in your diet.
  • Drink green tea, known for its antibacterial properties, to help maintain oral hygiene.

Practice good oral hygiene:
  • Brush teeth, gums, and tongue thoroughly at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove food debris and plaque buildup between teeth and gums.
  • Use mouthwash containing antibacterial agents to kill odor-causing bacteria and temporarily freshen breath.

Maintain overall health:
  • Stay adequately hydrated to prevent dry mouth, a common cause of halitosis.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, both of which can contribute to bad breath.
  • Regularly visit the dentist for preventative care and treatment of gum disease or other oral health issues.

While certain foods can contribute to bad breath, adopting a balanced diet and practicing good oral hygiene are key to managing this condition effectively.
