When it comes to weight loss, many people end up resorting to extreme measures, without realising the impact that it may have on their bodies. The case of a 26-year-old Chinese woman is no different, who ended up developing prediabetes in her attempt to look slim as a bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding.

The young Chinese woman, who weighed around 65 kg, decided to shed weight as soon as she got an invitation to be the bridesmaid. According to the South China Morning Post, the woman designed a “devil weight-loss plan,” which eliminated staple foods and included only small portions of vegetables and chicken breast daily.

Additionally, the young woman incorporated high-intensity workouts into her routine and sometimes ran more than 10 kilometres a day. As a result of “extreme dieting and excessive exercise,” she lost 15 kg in just two months and reached her goal of 50 kg right before the wedding. While this brought her joy, she soon began to feel sick.

The 26-year-old began to experience extreme fatigue, hunger, and thirst pangs. This was followed by dizziness and heart palpitations. Her symptoms made her visit the Endocrinology Department at Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where medical tests were arranged by Associate Chief Physician Cheng Boning.

Test results revealed that the Chinese woman’s fasting blood glucose and two-hour glucose tolerance readings were higher than normal, placing her within the prediabetic range.

Cheng described the young woman’s weight loss measures as extreme. She said, “She had almost completely eliminated carbohydrates from her diet while engaging in high-intensity exercise. This extreme strategy disrupted her insulin secretion, led to significant muscle and water loss and severely damaged her metabolism.”

The woman was given a treatment plan with well-balanced meals and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, along with some anaerobic training. This helped her achieve a stable, healthy weight of 52.5 kg.
