When it comes to staying fit, everyday lifestyle choices play a huge role, particularly what we consume and how we stay active. While these may not look significant, they determine our long-term health.
Cardiologist Dr Jeremy London took to his Instagram account to share four harmful habits that he personally avoids. These are not good for your heart as well as your body, and increase the risk of chronic illnesses, which you’d certainly not want.
While it brings temporary pleasure, it causes much more harm in the long run. While replacements can help you quit, they are also considered equally toxic.
Dr London said, “We know that smoking cigarettes is one of the single worst things you can do for your entire body. It increases the risk of lung cancer and dramatically increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. But smoking anything, vaping, or using marijuana is dangerous. Please don’t smoke.”

Studies show that a sedentary lifestyle can impact longevity. If you have a sitting job, it becomes even more important to move. This is one thing Dr. London avoids for himself. “Whether it’s a structured exercise with aerobic and strength training or a consistent 10 to 15 minute walk after meals, daily movement is crucial for my physical and mental health,” he advised.
It is important to stay on track when it comes to nutrition. Processed foods may please your taste buds, but they do a lot of damage otherwise. Dr London said, “My family and I try to prioritise a healthy, whole foods nutritional plan, but life gets in the way. If we can hit our goals 80% of the time, it is a win. Be thoughtful about what you put in your mouth.”
Just like smoking, alcohol only gives temporary pleasure and has the worst consequences for health. “Removing alcohol from my life has been absolutely transformative. And we know that alcohol is toxic to every cell in the body. And it just didn’t make sense to me to exercise regularly and have a thoughtful nutritional plan and then actively poison my body. It increases the risk of head and neck, GI, and even breast cancer. Alcohol is a personal choice. Just think about it,” Dr Jeremy said.
While this was the cardiologist’s list, he urged people to think of their own lives and assess what needs correction.
