Unlike previous generations that often equated success with excess, Gen Z is choosing intention over indulgence, balance over burnout, and long-term wellbeing over instant gratification. Across food, drink, wellness, and consumption habits, their lifestyle choices reveal a generation that wants to feel good, stay present, and live responsibly — without needing to announce it loudly.
One of the most visible shifts has been Gen Z’s changing relationship with alcohol. Drinking, once synonymous with socialising, is no longer the default. Instead, sober curiosity and mindful drinking have become part of everyday life. Alcohol-free beverages, low-ABV options, and ritualistic alternatives such as teas, botanical infusions, and functional drinks are gaining popularity. This move is not about restriction but awareness and choosing what supports mental clarity, emotional balance, and physical health.
While convenience remains important for this fast-paced, digital-first generation, quality is non-negotiable. Annapurna Batra, COO Newby Teas India, explains this mindset and says, “Wellness, for Gen Z, is not performative; it is personal, purposeful, and deeply integrated into how they live. For them a thoughtfully brewed cuppa offers calm in a fast-moving world, creating space for reflection, grounding, and self-care values that sit at the heart of this generation’s wellness-first lifestyle. What defines this shift is its longevity. Gen Z is not chasing fleeting trends but building lasting habits. Wellness for them is holistic, encompassing what they consume, how they feel, and the future they are helping shape.”
This holistic view of wellness extends beyond what Gen Z drinks. Food choices, daily routines, and even downtime are approached with mindfulness. Clean ingredients, low sugar content, natural flavours, and transparent labelling are no longer niche preferences. Artificial additives, excess sweetness, and empty calories are increasingly rejected. For Gen Z, knowing what goes into their body is a form of self-respect.
Vrinda Singhal, Co-founder of Swizzle, highlights how dramatically consumption patterns have shifted, “They prefer beverages that are actually better for health. Gen Z is consuming nearly 30% less alcohol than millennials. The focus has switched from getting drunk to feeling good, staying in control, and supporting mental and physical wellness. People don’t have to rely on alcohol to have a good time anymore, and that’s led to a big interest in high-quality non-alcoholic drinks and functional beverages that still feel fun and grown-up.”

Equally central to Gen Z’s lifestyle is environmental responsibility. This generation is deeply aware of how consumption impacts the planet and actively seeks out brands that reflect their values. Sustainability, ethical sourcing, and mindful production are not marketing buzzwords but decision-making tools. Gen Z rewards brands that are transparent, accountable, and genuinely invested in positive change. Identity also plays a crucial role in how Gen Z chooses to live. Food, drink, fashion, and wellness products are extensions of personal values and individuality. Choices are made not just for utility, but for what they communicate — authenticity, thoughtfulness, and social awareness. Experiences matter more than excess, and meaning outweighs status.
