Sitting for long hours may seem harmless, but it slowly harms your body in ways you can’t imagine. A 2024 study linked approximately 10 hours or more of sedentary behaviour to heightened risk of heart failure and cardiovascular death, even in those who exercised regularly.

In his new video on Instagram, vascular surgeon Dr Sumit Kapadia shared six ways in which prolonged sitting affects your veins, leading to health problems you’d want to avoid. He said, “Most people think sitting is harmless because it feels passive. But to your veins, long sitting is active damage.”

Dr Kapadia shared how sitting for long hours, with a desk-heavy job, can affect your veins gradually:

Blood starts pooling in the legs

Prolonged sitting implies inactive calf muscles, which are responsible for pumping blood back to the heart. This leads to slower circulation and more pressure on the veins. It may lead to swelling, discomfort, pain, and more.

Vein valves weaken over time

These valves are meant to prevent backflow of blood. Prolonged sitting reduces blood circulation and increases pressure on the veins, which gradually weakens them.

Heaviness and swelling become “normal”

The result of sitting for long hours is heaviness and swelling, especially by evening. Blood pools in the veins due to lack of circulation, leading to fluid buildup and pressure in the leg veins. Many people ignore this early warning sign.

Risk of varicose veins increases

Sustained pressure stretches veins, making them visible, twisted, and painful. This is all due to inactivity and working sedentary jobs. Even regular, long commutes increase the risk.

Clot risk quietly rises (DVT)

Reduced circulation due to inactivity creates the perfect environment for blood clots to form. These can also become life-threatening.

Circulation becomes inefficient overall
