  • Douching is unnecessary and can disrupt vaginal health, causing infections
  • Normal vaginal discharge is clear or white; changes may signal infection
  • Open dialogue and expert advice are vital for maintaining vaginal health

Vaginal health is an important aspect of women’s overall health. From the basics of cleanliness to disease prevention and reproductive and sexual health, a healthy vagina really has an excellent impact on overall comfort, confidence and quality of life. However, too many women are still led by myths, cultural stigmas and misinformation, leaving them to ignore symptoms or bear the pain quietly.

Things like bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, unusual discharge, and itching are common enough and are not life-threatening by any means – but many times embarrassment or anxiety prevents a woman from seeking medical help. Nonsensical behaviour such as the unnecessary douching, misconceptions of normal discharge or unreasonable inhibitors about their body obstruct the whole process even more.

Dr Manju Gupta, Senior Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospitals, Noida said that open dialogue and the right information is essential to sexual health. By busting a few common myths and pushing women to get expert advice, vaginal health can be protected and prioritized — just like any other aspect of your body.

Myth: The vagina must be washed out with douching

Fact: Many women believe they need to be douching for a healthy vagina. But doing so can mess with the natural balance of bacteria and pH levels in your vagina, leading to bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. Vagina is a self-cleaning organ so, for outside cleanliness use water and avoid douching.

Myth: Any kind of vaginal discharge is alarming and could be infected

Fact: Normal vaginal discharge is clear or white, and the consistency can change when a woman has her period. A change in colour, consistency or odour could suggest an infection. When you observe changes in the colour of your vaginal discharge, do not delay to seek help.

Myth: A vagina should be tight and firm

Fact: Realize the vagina is a stretchy muscle. So, when it’s stressed, it’ll stretch and then snap back to its original shape. It can stretch during sex or childbirth and then return to about the same size afterward. Vagina tightness is not standardized and in different people and on different person it may be or feel differently, as well in a case like age, birth, hormonal changes can affect that aspect of them.

Myth: Tight clothes / under garments can cause vaginal infections

Fact: Wearing tight clothing itself does not put you at risk for an infection, but it can hold on to moisture and heat. This can pave the way for bacteria or yeast, which in turn can attract infections. So for the best personal hygiene and comfort, stick to breathable cotton underwear, especially in hot or humid conditions.

Myth: Vaginal rejuvenation can only be advised to older women

Fact: This is not true. In fact, vaginal rejuvenation can benefit women of all ages. Laser vaginal rejuvenation helps with vaginal laxity, dryness, and discomfort that may be seen after childbirth or because of hormonal changes. It’s a safe, non-surgical treatment that restores both comfort and confidence for women. So, opt for it if recommended by the doctor.
