  • Incident prompts probe into school supplement supervision

Nineteen students from a Zilla Parishad (ZP) school in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district were hospitalised after allegedly consuming an excessive dose of anti-anaemia tablets without supervision. The incident was reported on February 13 from Bhamdeli village in Bhadravati tehsil and has triggered a high-level probe by district authorities.

According to officials, iron and folic acid tablets are distributed to students every Monday as part of a government-led anaemia prevention initiative. However, some students reportedly consumed additional tablets on Tuesday when teachers were not present. By Wednesday night, 19 students began complaining of nausea, dizziness, and feeling “extremely unwell.” They were rushed to Chandrapur District Hospital. Doctors have stated that 16 students are stable, while three remain under observation.

While the students are recovering, the episode has raised a critical health question: if iron supplements are essential, how much is too much?

Why Are Iron Tablets Given in Schools?

A Springer Nature article noted that India has one of the highest rates of anaemia among children and adolescents. An iron shortage can make you tired, less focused, weaker against illness, grow more slowly, and do worse in school. To fix this, public schools give out iron pills once a week. They want to boost iron levels in the blood and stop long-term health issues.

When taken as directed, iron pills are safe and work well. Problems happen when people take too much.

Can Excess Iron Be Dangerous?

Yes. Unlike vitamins that dissolve in water and leave the body, iron stays inside you. According to National Institutes of Health, taking too much iron can upset your stomach and cause things like:

  • Feeling sick
  • Throwing up
  • Stomach pain
  • Runny poop
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Feeling weak

In the worst cases, too much iron can hurt organs inside you, such as your liver. Kids are at higher risk because even a little too much can cause clear signs.

Safe Dosage

How much iron you need changes based on how old you are and whether you're a boy or a girl.

Preventive doses provided in school programmes are carefully calculated to meet weekly requirements safely. But taking too many pills at the same time can go over the safe upper limit, which makes you more likely to have bad reactions.

That's why you should take iron pills when a doctor tells you to. They're not sweets, so don't just pop them whenever you feel like it.

The Chandrapur event shows how vital it is to keep a close eye on health programs in schools. Supplements are key to fighting anaemia, but people need to store them , hand them out , and take them as told.

Parents and those looking after kids should remember: don't give children iron pills unless a doctor says so, and always stick to the right amount.

Not having enough iron is a big problem — but when it comes to taking extra iron, more isn't always better. Using it the right way makes sure that something that can save lives doesn't turn into something risky for health.
