Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya is the kind of film that refuses to age. Twenty-six years after it first hit screens, the Mumbai underworld classic has returned to theatres, giving audiences a fresh chance to watch Bhiku Mhatre and Satya collide on the big screen again. And as the cast and crew reunited for a special event to mark the re-release, one story from Urmila Matondkar stole the spotlight for its honesty, humour, and a very unexpected scolding.

Fittingly, the moment has landed on Urmila’s birthday, making it feel like the universe planned a little throwback gift, served with a side of nostalgia.

Speaking at the event with Radio Nasha, Urmila revisited her Satya days and recalled how ace designer Manish Malhotra once shouted at her. Not because of a costume malfunction or a styling dispute, but because she revealed how inexpensive one of her sarees actually was.

“I have to mention another maverick who worked on the movie, who I got firing from, which is Manish Malhotra,” she said, setting up the memory like a punchline with context. She explained that after Rangeela, the team was working with tight resources and “buying this cheap sarees.”

Then came the moment that triggered the legendary phone call.

“So this one time, during an interview someone asked me something about my looks… and I was like, ‘Yaar, why are you all so obsessed with my pout and image? I am wearing sarees worth ₹500.’ Suddenly, I get a call… at that time mobiles were not common. He yelled, ‘Tumne ₹500 ka saree kyu bola? Was it necessary to mention THAT?’ I was like, ‘Manish, that’s the whole point’. I guess he missed it. But, today, he would have been happy that it’s okay it’s made up for it.”

What this really means is: Satya wasn’t built on polish. It was built on intent. And Urmila, even then, was pushing back against the gaze that tried to reduce her to surface-level glamour.

She also admitted she felt irritated by critics who only fixated on her looks instead of her choices as a performer. Recalling a scene where her character shares lunch with Shefali Shah and Manoj Bajpayee, she described quietly watching them and clocking their lived-in chemistry.

“I remember the scene where I go for lunch with Shefali Shah and Manoj Bajpayee… It was all quite hotchpotch there, with people trying to set up lights and camera… And I suddenly realised from their body language, which was of a couple, which has been married for 20 years… Now when and how did they figure that… there I was just sitting and completely convinced that I was sitting in front of some super talent, and now I just have to match them up and prove all those critics wrong who were only tomtoming about my glamour quotient, which incidentally is all that they could see but anyway, that’s part of past.”

Today, Urmila Matondkar turned a year older.
