Karisma Kapoor recently reminisced about her experiences on the set of the iconic film Hum Saath Saath Hain, which was released in 1999. The film, directed by Sooraj Barjatya, featured a stellar cast including Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Mohnish Behl, Tabu, and Sonali Bendre. During her appearance on the dance reality show India’s Best Dancer 3, Karisma opened up about the dynamics on set and the unique personality traits of her co-stars.
Reflecting on her time with Sonali Bendre, Karisma revealed, “We really miss the days of *Hum Saath Saath Hain; there are so many good memories associated with it.” She recalled that Sonali had a rather quiet demeanor during filming. “Sonali was very quiet, and I was the talkative one on set. She elegantly used to sit quietly with her book,” Karisma said. This sparked curiosity in her and Tabu. “We always used to wonder, ‘What is she reading? Why is she not talking to us? What is there in that book?’”
Karisma’s animated nature often contrasted with Sonali’s calmness. While Karisma and Tabu were engrossed in discussions about the film, including which songs they would be shooting next, Sonali preferred to immerse herself in her reading. This led to humorous moments on set, as Karisma recalled trying to coax Sonali out of her corner. “We used to go and ask her to come have lunch with us, and she would say, ‘I’m vegetarian so I only have a salad,’ and I used to be like, ‘Fine, but ‘Aa Jao Salad Lekar’,” she laughed, capturing the light-hearted camaraderie among the cast.
Sonali Bendre, in her reflection, echoed Karisma’s sentiments about their time together. She described the film as “an amazing journey” filled with camaraderie, stating that they were like a big family during the shoot. “One of the best memories for me was sitting together and eating food,” she shared. The shared meals were a vital part of their experience, fostering a sense of unity and connection among the cast members.
Despite her quiet nature, Sonali had her moments of joy and excitement on set, especially during the musical sequences. She fondly recalled the song “ABCD I Love You,” noting that Karisma wasn’t present for all the scenes. “We used to miss her, as most times, all of us used to be together,” she said. This highlights the strong bond that developed between the actors during the filming process.
Karisma’s recollections of her interactions with Sonali reveal the beauty of their friendship. While they may have had different approaches to socializing, their mutual respect and affection shone through. Karisma’s playful personality served as a bridge to bring the quieter Sonali into the fold, demonstrating how diverse personalities can harmonize in a creative environment.
Their shared experiences on Hum Saath Saath Hain continue to resonate with both actors, highlighting how the film was not just a professional venture but a significant chapter in their personal lives as well. The memories of laughter, shared meals, and the joyful chaos of filming create a vivid picture of the behind-the-scenes life of one of Bollywood’s beloved family dramas.
