On Sridevi’s death anniversary, an old interview of her husband and producer Boney Kapoor has resurfaced, offering a deeply personal glimpse into a chapter of their lives that unfolded against the backdrop of one of Mumbai’s darkest moments.
In a conversation with Chanda Kochhar on her YouTube channel, Boney revisited 1993, the year the city was rocked by serial bomb blasts.
At the time, Sridevi was staying at the Hotel Sea Rock in Mumbai. Boney had already confessed his feelings for her and even proposed, though their relationship was not yet public. What followed was a turning point.
“When Sridevi came to my house, when this bomb blast had happened, she used to get along very well with Arjun. Arjun was her favourite when she stayed as a guest. He didn’t know what was happening,” Boney recalled.
The blasts in March 1993 had shaken the city. Concerned for her safety, Boney took immediate steps. In an earlier interview with Filmfare, he had shared, “Those days Sridevi would be put up at the Hotel Sea Rock. When I came to know about the blasts, I immediately called up her mother and insisted that Sridevi would no longer be staying there. I sent my staff to get her home. Then on, till the release of Roop Ki Rani in May 1993, Sridevi stayed in my house.”
During that period, Sridevi stayed with Boney and his family, including his children Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor from his first marriage. According to Boney, Arjun and Sridevi shared a warm bond during her stay, unaware of the emotional complexities unfolding around them.
Reflecting on that time, Boney said, “I remember those days vividly but somehow, things don’t go the way you planned.”
He had also once revealed that he proposed to Sridevi in Chennai, but she did not speak to him for six to eight months afterwards. Their relationship eventually progressed, and the couple tied the knot in June 1996. They publicly announced their marriage in 1997, months before the birth of their first daughter, Janhvi Kapoor. They later welcomed their second daughter, Khushi Kapoor, in 2000.
Sridevi, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars of the 1980s and 1990s, passed away in 2018, leaving behind an irreplaceable void in the film industry and in the lives of her family and fans.
As the industry and admirers remember her today, Boney’s recollections stand as a reminder of a lesser-known, intimate phase of her life — one marked by fear, transition, and the beginnings of a relationship that would go on to shape their shared future.
