Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana has once again shown why she is admired not just for her elegance at the crease, but also for her warmth off it. The star batter won hearts on social media after responding to a touching message from a young fan in Kashmir, a moment that quickly turned into a quiet reminder of sport’s power to connect lives across distances.
The moment was first shared by filmmaker Kabir Khan, who recently visited Kashmir and posted photographs from his time in the region.
During a walk through Aru Valley, Kabir Khan met a little girl who shyly told him that Smriti Mandhana was her favourite cricketer. Moved by the interaction, Kabir Khan shared the anecdote online, hoping the Indian star would see it.
“Walking with my camera in Kashmir always rewards me with magical moments,” he wrote.
“Like this little girl in Aru who wanted me to tell Smriti Mandhana that she is her favourite player. I hope Smriti gets to see this post. Or the boys whose playground has a mountain stream as the boundary. If you hit a six, the ball will flow all the way down the valley into the Jhelum river.”
At the time, Smriti Mandhana was in the middle of India’s five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. Despite her busy schedule, the post reached her, and her response was simple, genuine, and instantly viral.
“Please give the little champ in Aru a big hug from me and tell her I’m cheering for her too!” Smriti Mandhana replied, turning a fleeting moment into a lifelong memory for the young fan.
The gesture came on a day that was already special for Mandhana on the field. Earlier on Sunday, she created history during the first Women’s T20 International against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam by becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to cross 4,000 runs in T20 internationals. Overall, she is only the second woman in the world to reach the milestone, after New Zealand’s Suzie Bates.
Smriti Mandhana achieved the landmark in just 3,227 balls, quicker than Bates, who took 3,675 deliveries. In the match, she scored 25 off 25 balls while chasing a modest target of 122. Though her innings was brief, it was enough to etch her name into the record books. The game also marked her return to international cricket following India’s ODI World Cup triumph last month.
Earlier, India’s bowlers had set the tone by restricting Sri Lanka to 121 for six, with Vishmi Gunaratne top-scoring with 39. On a day of records and victories, Mandhana’s message to a young Kashmiri fan stood out as the most meaningful moment of all.
