DC Studios’ grounded, noir-driven Batman universe may be adding a familiar yet unexpected face. Sebastian Stan, the Oscar-nominated actor best known for playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is reportedly in talks to join The Batman Part II, starring Robert Pattinson.

According to a report by Variety, discussions are underway, though details about Stan’s character remain tightly guarded. That secrecy has only fueled speculation. Fans are already debating whether the actor will step into Gotham as a conflicted ally, a psychologically layered villain, or someone operating in the moral grey zones that director Matt Reeves is known to explore. Given the tone established in the first film, any new addition is likely to be complex rather than comic-book straightforward.

Stan’s potential casting is especially interesting considering his history with superhero franchises. After more than a decade in Marvel, a move into DC’s darker, more introspective Batman world would mark a clear tonal shift. It would also reunite him with Pattinson, whom he previously worked with in The Devil All the Time (2020), a film remembered for its brooding atmosphere and morally fractured characters. That shared screen history makes Stan a natural fit for Reeves’ Gotham.

The ensemble for The Batman Part II is already shaping up to be formidable. Returning cast members include Colin Farrell as Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Barry Keoghan, who made a chilling cameo as the Joker in the first film, is also expected to return. Reports have also linked Scarlett Johansson to the sequel, marking another high-profile crossover from Marvel to DC.

The first The Batman, released in 2022, earned approximately $772 million worldwide and was praised for its gritty detective story, atmospheric world-building, and Pattinson’s brooding take on Bruce Wayne. The sequel is expected to double down on that noir sensibility, expanding Gotham’s criminal and psychological landscape rather than shifting toward spectacle-heavy superhero fare.

Production on The Batman Part II is slated to begin in Spring 2024, with a theatrical release planned for October 2027. While the film exists outside the main continuity of the newly rebooted DC Universe, it is still being developed under DC Studios, overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

If Sebastian Stan’s deal comes through, his addition could further deepen the franchise’s reputation for strong performances and psychologically rich storytelling, reinforcing Gotham as a place where heroes and villains are rarely easy to tell apart.
