The latest film from Tamil superstar Suriya, Retro, which was directed by renowned Karthik Subbaraj, had extremely high expectations. The movie created a lot of pre-release buzz from the trailer's release to Suriya's eye-catching costume choices.
The initial numbers demonstrated the eagerness with which fans awaited the actor's comeback to form. Nevertheless, following a robust start, Retro has seen a discernible drop in box office momentum during its first weekend of release.
According to a report by Sacnilk.com, the film has managed to surpass the ₹30 crore mark within three days of its release, earning an estimated ₹33.49 crore in India so far. The day-wise breakdown reveals a sharp fluctuation: Retro opened with a solid ₹19.25 crore on Friday, setting the tone for a promising run. However, Saturday’s earnings dipped significantly to ₹6.49 crore – the film’s lowest single-day figure yet – which is particularly surprising given it was a weekend day.
On Saturday, the film also recorded an overall Tamil occupancy rate of 38.49%, indicating a decline in footfall.
Despite the decline, the movie is still praised, particularly for Suriya's performance in the title role. He plays Paarivel Kannan, also called Paari, in Retro, a man troubled by violent memories. Opposite him, Pooja Hegde plays Rukmini, who is lovingly referred to as Rukku. Experienced actors Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and Prakash Raj are also part of the ensemble cast.

The critical response has been largely positive, with particular appreciation for Suriya’s compelling performance. Director Karthik Subbaraj also acknowledged the audience’s support on social media.
The movie's performance in the upcoming days will be critical in determining its long-term box office prospects, even with strong word-of-mouth and ongoing support from Suriya's fan base.
