Thalapathy Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, has been making headlines ever since it became embroiled in a controversy surrounding its CBFC certification, with no official confirmation yet on its release date. The prolonged uncertainty has reportedly led to significant financial losses, not just for the film’s makers but also for theatre owners across Tamil Nadu.
According to a report by India Today, the delay has put immense pressure on multiple stakeholders, including Jana Nayagan producer KVN Productions and several cinema halls in the state, with overall losses estimated to be around Rs 100 crore. The stalled release has disrupted what was expected to be a major festive season for the Tamil film industry.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala elaborated on the situation and explained how the postponement affected the box office, as reported by HT.
He said, “Pongal was supposed to witness the clash of Vijay's Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi. However, the film's release was stalled. Vijay's film could easily have made Rs 150-200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. Parasakthi made ₹55 crore in Tamil Nadu.” He further pointed out that Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar turned out to be a “complete washout,” while Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil managed to earn around Rs 30 crore.
Continuing his assessment, Ramesh added, “Since there is no projected revenue, the Tamil Nadu box office could have lost almost ₹100 crore because of Jana Nayagan's delay."
The film was slated to release during Pongal and was expected to be a grand farewell for Vijay before his reported exit from cinema and entry into politics. The delay has therefore come as a major disappointment for fans, especially given the cultural and commercial importance of a Pongal release in Tamil Nadu.
Bala also claimed that the first quarter of 2026 “screams crisis” for Tamil cinema. He noted that theatre owners could have sustained their businesses for at least two to three months on the strength of Jana Nayagan alone, which was expected to revive the market after a dry spell that began in November 2025.

Meanwhile, the legal uncertainty continues. After the Madras High Court referred the matter to a single judge for another hearing, the CBFC moved the Supreme Court with a caveat requesting that no order be passed without hearing its side in connection with the film’s release. As a result, fans who were hopeful of a February release may now have to brace for a longer wait.
Jana Nayagan features Vijay in the lead role alongside Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol, and is widely anticipated as a landmark film in the actor’s career.
