The office of celebrated actor Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR) has shared news of a major legal win protecting his identity and image.

The Hon’ble Delhi High Court has passed an order safeguarding Mr Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao’s (NTR) personality and publicity rights after the actor filed a petition highlighting the widespread unauthorised and commercial use of his name, likeness, and associated identifiers across various platforms.

The Court’s ruling covers not only his well-known names like “NTR”, “Jr. NTR”, “NTR Jr.”, “Tarak”, “Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr.”, and “Jr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao”, but also his popular sobriquets such as “Man of Masses” and “Young Tiger”.

It extends to his image, likeness, and other personal attributes, with strict instructions that any unauthorised use must be removed immediately in line with the law.

At a prima facie stage, the Court recognised Mr Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao’s (NTR) immense celebrity status in India, noting that his name and image are uniquely associated with him in the public mind. This recognition affirms his proprietary rights over his personality and related identifiers.

The Hon’ble Court also highlighted that personality and publicity rights are an essential part of the right to life and freedom under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India, and these rights can be enforced under the Copyright Act, 1957, and the Trade Marks Act, 1999.

Intermediary platforms have been directed to treat the petition as a statutory complaint under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, and to take prompt action against any identified infringing links.
