The trailer launch of O’Romeo in Mumbai was expected to be a lively celebration marking the return of filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj to dark, character-driven cinema. Instead, the evening quickly became a talking point for an unexpected reason after veteran actor Nana Patekar chose to leave the event midway, reportedly after waiting close to an hour for the programme to begin.
According to sources present at the venue, the event was significantly delayed, with guests and members of the cast left waiting for proceedings to start. Nana Patekar, known for his blunt honesty and impatience with unnecessary formalities, eventually decided not to wait any longer. He quietly exited the venue, an act that did not go unnoticed and soon became the most discussed moment of the night.
While the incident could have easily turned awkward, Vishal Bhardwaj addressed it with candour and warmth while speaking to the media. Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the actor, Bhardwaj offered a revealing analogy. “In a class, we’ve often had someone who bullies other kids, but also entertains, and yet everyone wants to be around him. So, Nana is that person,” he said, highlighting the actor’s complex and unapologetic personality.
Bhardwaj also pointed out that despite knowing each other for nearly three decades, O’Romeo marks their first professional collaboration. “Our friendship is of 27 years old, but we’re working for the first time together,” he noted. Addressing Nana Patekar’s exit directly, the filmmaker added with a smile, “If he were here, it would’ve been fun. But in his signature style, he said, ‘Mujhe ek gaanta wait karaya, main jaa raha hoon.’ We didn’t say anything because this is what makes him Nana Patekar.”
Beyond the off-screen drama, the trailer of O’Romeo itself hints at a film steeped in moral ambiguity, intense emotions, and layered performances. The visuals suggest a brooding narrative where characters operate in shades of grey rather than clear right and wrong, a space Vishal Bhardwaj is known to explore with confidence.
Performances appear central to the film’s impact. Nana Patekar and Avinash Tiwary seem to bring a raw, sharp edge to their roles, while Shahid Kapoor appears to juggle multiple emotional and psychological shades with ease. His on-screen pairing with Triptii Dimri has also drawn attention, adding another intriguing layer to the story.
O’Romeo marks Shahid Kapoor’s fourth collaboration with Vishal Bhardwaj after Kaminey, Haider, and Rangoon, a partnership that has consistently delivered complex and unconventional cinema. The film features a strong ensemble cast including Shahid Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, Avinash Tiwary, Farida Jalal, Nana Patekar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani, Aruna Irani, Hussain Dalal, and Rahul Deshpande, with Vikrant Massey making a special appearance.
