Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, a towering figure in Indian cinema, is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The award is the highest honor in Indian cinema and is bestowed upon artists for their outstanding contribution to the industry. Mithun, known for his diverse filmography and charismatic screen presence, expressed his surprise and gratitude for the recognition, stating that he never imagined a boy from the bylanes of Kolkata could achieve such an honor.

In an emotional response to the announcement, Mithun shared, "I have no language to express how I feel. Na main hass sakta hun, na khushi mein ro sakta hun (I cannot smile, nor can I cry in happiness)." This statement reflects the overwhelming emotions that accompanied this acknowledgment of his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema. Mithun, who has often been celebrated as a self-made actor, reiterated his humble beginnings, stating, "I come from the bylanes of Kolkata; I have risen from footpaths. A boy from such a place winning such an honour…I could not have imagined this. I am extremely happy. I dedicate this to my family and my fans across the world."

The announcement of the award was made by Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on September 30. Vaishnaw praised Mithun’s remarkable journey, saying, “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honored to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”

The 74-year-old actor will receive the award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024. This recognition is seen as a tribute to his illustrious career spanning over four decades, during which Mithun delivered some of the finest performances in Indian cinema. He made his debut with the critically acclaimed film Mrigayaa directed by Mrinal Sen, for which he won the National Award. His unique dance style and versatile roles in films like Disco Dancer earned him the moniker of "Disco King" and made him a household name across India.

Between 1980 and 1990, Mithun headlined several films and became a popular figure in Bollywood, known for his dedication, discipline, and consistent performances.
