National Award-winning classical vocalist Mahesh Kale has reacted to the ongoing conversations around Arijit
Singh stepping away from playback singing, offering a balanced and deeply reflective perspective on artistic realignment. Rather than speculating on the reasons behind the decision, Mahesh chose to focus on the larger philosophy of music and what sustains an artist over time. He shared his thoughts in an interview with Moneycontrol.com.
Responding to the discussions, Mahesh Kale said, “The answer to why Arijit Singh stepped away is best answered by him. Conjectures are unfair.”
He went on to place the conversation in a broader historical and artistic context. “Having said that, fundamentally, way before civilization found commerce around music, music has existed for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years. If we actually focus on why music itself exists, then it is easy to identify that it exists to create joy in a very accessible way. And the discipline helps you repeat that joy and expand on it.”
Reflecting on the pressures that can accompany sustained success, Mahesh added, “When sometimes the journey starts and begins from here and reaches a place of routine where the deliverable insists on a certain output that hinders you from harnessing or connecting with your joy, then there is a possibility of realignment.”
He concluded with admiration and goodwill for the singer. “Perhaps Arijit felt that he wanted to realign, and I really admire him for all the music he has done so far. And I believe that the place that he has found in so many hearts, the hearts and the people will seek him in whatever form he wants to express his music in. And I have nothing but the very best wishes for him and am curious to see what he comes up with next.”
Mahesh Kale’s remarks framed the situation not as a dramatic exit, but as a reminder that music predates commerce, fame and industry expectations — and that sometimes, rediscovering joy becomes the most important creative decision of all.
