Veteran actor Kamal Haasan continues to redefine stardom in Indian cinema, and a recent revelation by filmmaker and actor Yugi Sethu has once again highlighted the scale of his stature.
According to Sethu, the legendary actor was paid an astonishing amount for his appearance in Nag Ashwin’s ambitious sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD.
The 2024 film, headlined by Prabhas, also featured Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan in a pivotal role.
Set in a dystopian future, the film became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films ever and was widely praised for its grand visuals and expansive storytelling.
During an interview with Indiaglitz, Yugi Sethu spoke about Kamal Haasan’s remuneration for the film and called him the highest-paid actor in the country. He revealed that Kamal Haasan was reportedly paid a whopping Rs 150 crore for a short shooting schedule.
“Kamal sir’s stature is such. He is getting paid Rs 150 crore for 20 days of the call sheet for Kalki 2898 AD. I told him on his birthday that he is the highest-paid actor in India and is getting 1 million dollars per day, because he was paid Rs 150 crore for 20 days,” Sethu said.
However, the story did not end there. Sethu further revealed that Kamal himself corrected the calculation after he spoke to producer Aswani Dutt.
“I told him thanks for making our friend the highest-paid actor in India. When I said Rs 150 crore for 20 days, he replied, no, sir, he has given only 10 days. Sorry, I correct myself then, it’s 2 million dollars per day,” Sethu said.
Two million dollars per day roughly translates to around Rs 18 crore per day, making it one of the most staggering daily payouts ever reported for an Indian actor.
Despite the buzz, reports about Kamal Haasan’s actual remuneration remain inconsistent.
Some reports claim he received around Rs 20 crore for the role, while others suggest the amount exceeded Rs 100 crore. Regardless of the exact figure, his role as the mysterious and powerful Supreme Yaskin left a strong impression on audiences.
In Kalki 2898 AD, Kamal portrays a totalitarian god-king who rules over the futuristic Complex. Though his screen time in the first installment is limited, the ending clearly sets up a much larger presence for him in the upcoming sequel.
Work on Kalki 2 has already begun. Amitabh Bachchan recently shared pictures with Kamal Haasan on his blog, writing, “meeting up with the great Kamal Haasan… we shall be working together after ages… last in Giraftar… Kalki 2 begun the work.”
Apart from the sequel, Kamal Haasan has several projects lined up. He is set to collaborate with Rajinikanth in a film directed by Jailer filmmaker Nelson Dilipkumar. The veteran actor is also producing multiple films under his banner while continuing to take on ambitious acting roles.
With decades of cinematic excellence behind him and major projects ahead, Kamal Haasan’s presence continues to command both creative and commercial power across Indian cinema.
