On the birth anniversary of Divya Bharti, the memory of the young star still carries a strange mix of stardom, innocence and unanswered questions. She was just 19 when she died on April 5, 1993, after falling from the fifth-floor balcony of her Mumbai apartment. Decades later, the tragedy continues to be discussed in hushed tones across Bollywood corridors.

Nearly thirty years on, actress Guddi Maruti has revisited that night and addressed the many rumours that followed. In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, she recalled how stories of foul play spread almost immediately. “Kitne stories, that isne dhakka de diya, usne dhakka de diya,” Guddi said, referring to the endless conspiracy theories. She added, “But good that Neeta Lulla was there to see…”

According to Guddi, fashion designer Neeta Lulla was present in the apartment that evening. She described the scene in detail. “Woh baat kar rahi hai or usne aise palti… suppose khidki peeche hai, or ye sofa pe baithi hai. And usne peeche se bola, ‘Main dekh rahi hoon shayad Sajid ki gadi aayi hai’… and she’s actually seeing her go down… wo neeche jhuki and she’s gone down.” Guddi’s account suggests that Divya had leaned out to check if her husband, producer Sajid Nadiadwala, had arrived, and lost her balance.

Guddi also spoke candidly about Divya’s personality. “She was a nice but messed up girl,” she said, explaining that the actress was extremely overworked and emotionally strained. Recalling their last meeting at a party attended by Govinda and Sajid Nadiadwala, Guddi shared, “She was okay at the party, but I felt she was a little sad. She had to go for an outdoor shoot, but she didn’t want to.”

The tragedy deeply affected those close to her. Guddi mentioned that Sajid was not at home at the time of the incident and was devastated by the loss. Despite persistent whispers, the police eventually ruled Divya’s death an accident.

Filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani, who worked with her in Shola Aur Shabnam, also remembered the shocking night. He said he rushed to the hospital as soon as he heard the news. “She was all alone, by that time no one was there,” he recalled. “Till then, no one had come. As soon as I found out, I immediately rushed to the hospital.”

Nihalani often spoke about her dedication. He revealed that once a nail pierced her foot during a shoot, yet she insisted on working. “She kept working… by 6 a.m. she was ready for a song shoot.” When he cancelled the schedule, she surprised him. “She came into my room… and sat on my chest saying ‘wake up’.”
