Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested again in New Orleans on Saturday and charged with an additional misdemeanor count of simple battery, authorities said, marking another legal setback tied to an altercation during the city’s Mardi Gras celebrations.
According to court records, the 39-year-old star voluntarily surrendered to police on February 28 after officials issued a new warrant related to the earlier incident, which involved him in a physical confrontation outside the Royal Street Inn & R Bar in the French Quarter.
Shia’s attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, maintained that the latest arrest stems from the same February 17 confrontation for which he had already been charged with two counts of simple battery.
“No regular person would be required to post over $100,000 in bonds and be jailed two separate times for one misdemeanor incident,” Chervinsky said. “Just as he does not deserve preferential treatment, Mr. LaBeouf also does not deserve to be treated more harshly by the police and courts just because he is a public figure.”
The initial arrest, which occurred during the height of Mardi Gras celebrations, was prompted by an allegedly aggressive episode in which Shia is accused of punching multiple people and repeatedly using homophobic slurs at those involved in or observing the confrontation. A police report cited video evidence showing him shoving one person to the ground and hitting another in the face, potentially dislocating a victim’s nose.
Following that arrest, a New Orleans judge ordered Shia to post a substantial bond, take part in substance abuse treatment, and undergo drug testing as conditions of his release. LaBeouf appeared in court, took a drug and alcohol test that reportedly did not show illegal drugs in his system, and was instructed to remain in treatment while awaiting further proceedings. His next court date is scheduled for mid-March.
For the latest incident, LaBeouf posted a $5,000 bond after surrendering, and he was released while the case continues to move through the justice system. The actor has not yet entered a plea on the new charge
