Nick Reiner, 32, appeared briefly in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, a day after being charged with the murder of his parents, acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
He had been scheduled for an arraignment, during which he was expected to enter a plea. However, his attorney, Alan Jackson, told the court it was “too early” for a plea, and both sides agreed to delay the arraignment until January 7, 2026.
Nick Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing deaths of his parents. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman is also pursuing a murder charge with special circumstances, which could make Reiner eligible for the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
Speaking briefly to reporters, Jackson emphasised the complexity of the case, asking the public and media not to “rush to judgment.”
For the first time since their parents’ deaths, Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy, issued a statement requesting respect, privacy, and compassion: “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Authorities confirmed that Rob and Michele Reiner were found on Saturday with multiple sharp-force injuries in the master bedroom of their Los Angeles home. Romy Reiner discovered her father’s body after receiving a call from a massage therapist who had arrived for a scheduled appointment.
Assistant Los Angeles Police Chief Dominic Choi explained that information gathered on Sunday led police to view Nick Reiner as a person of interest, culminating in his arrest, which occurred without incident.
Over the years, Nick Reiner has publicly discussed struggles with drug abuse. He previously collaborated with his father on the film ‘Being Charlie,’ a project loosely inspired by his life that aimed to repair their strained relationship.
