The global box office in 2025 told a fascinating story of shifting audience priorities, franchise resilience, and the sheer power of international markets. While Hollywood continued to rely heavily on established intellectual properties, the year also proved that global cinema, particularly animation and event films, could outperform even the most trusted American tentpoles.
Interestingly, while Disney placed two films in the global top ten, its once invincible Marvel Cinematic Universe saw a noticeable decline. None of Marvel Studios’ three 2025 releases — Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, managed to crack the worldwide top ten.
Here’s a closer look at the ten films that earned the most in ticket sales worldwide in 2025.
Ne Zha 2 ($2.001 billion)
The undisputed box office champion of 2025 was Ne Zha 2. Directed by Yu Yang, the animated epic grossed a staggering $2.001 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the year by a considerable margin. While independent studio A24 distributed an English-dubbed version in select markets, earning $23.2 million domestically, the overwhelming majority of its revenue came from overseas territories, where it amassed a colossal $1.977 billion. The film’s success reaffirmed the global dominance of Chinese animation and the power of culturally rooted storytelling on an international scale.

Zootopia 2 ($1.103 billion)
Disney’s biggest success of the year arrived in the form of Zootopia 2. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the sequel capitalised on the enduring popularity of its anthropomorphic universe. Featuring voice performances from Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Ke Huy Kwan, the film grossed $1.103 billion worldwide, including $272.3 million domestically and $830.7 million internationally.
Lilo & Stitch ($1.038 billion)
Close behind was Disney’s live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. Starring newcomer Maia Kealoha as Lilo and original co-creator Chris Sanders reprising his iconic role as Stitch, the film became a global phenomenon. With a worldwide gross of $1.038 billion, including $423.7 million from North America alone, the film proved that nostalgia-driven remakes still have enormous commercial appeal when executed with emotional sincerity.

A Minecraft Movie ($958.1 million)
Warner Bros. struck gold with A Minecraft Movie, the first major big-screen adaptation of the massively popular video game. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge, the film grossed $958.1 million worldwide. Nearly $423.4 million came from North America, while international markets contributed $534.1 million, highlighting the cross-generational appeal of gaming IP.

Jurassic World: Rebirth ($868.9 million)

Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, the seventh entry in the franchise earned $868.9 million globally. $339.6 million was earned domestically while $529.2 million internationally.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle: The Movie ($779.9 million)

F1: The Movie ($631.6 million)
Joseph Kosinski followed up Top Gun: Maverick with F1: The Movie, a high-speed Formula One thriller starring Brad Pitt. Released by Apple Original Films, the movie grossed $631.6 million globally, including $189.5 million domestically and $442.1 million internationally.
