Actor Daniel Radcliffe surprised his co-stars on the set of the new NBC sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, not for his acting but for his unexpected enthusiasm for gossip, according to Precious Way, who co-stars with him in the comedy series.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Way shared that Daniel eagerly engaged with the stories she would share about her personal life and even followed up on them later — a side of the former Harry Potter star she didn’t expect.
Way, who plays Brina, the girlfriend of titular character Reggie Dinkins — portrayed by Tracy Morgan — said she initially felt starstruck meeting Daniel for the first table read, joking that she had her “Harry Potter moment” upon realising she’d be working with him.
“I’m not going to lie. The other ones, they probably try to front, but I definitely had my Harry Potter moment," Way tells PEOPLE. “I called my manager, I said, ‘Y’all didn’t tell me I was going to be on a show with Harry Potter!’ And then I remember the first thing when I walked into the table read, I was nervous."
She said further, but that nervousness quickly gave way to admiration once she found out he was personable and genuinely interested in connecting with his castmates.
“I don’t think about the Harry Potter thing as much anymore because he’s so great, just as a person and his genius that he is," she shared.
What surprised Way most was how invested Radcliffe became in various pieces of “tea” — slang for juicy or personal anecdotes — that she shared with him. “But also, now, I live for telling him my tea. I did not know that’s the way it was going to go, but he ate it up."
He reportedly asked about her romantic life and wasn’t shy about giving his thoughts, even jokingly critiquing her romantic interests.“He’s pulling up the pictures. He’s like, ‘I don’t know. You could do a little better.’ What?! Oh my goodness. I love him, though. I didn’t know it was going to go that way, but I love it."
The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins — created by 30 Rock alums Robert Carlock and Sam Means — follows a disgraced football star attempting to rehabilitate his public image with the help of an award-winning filmmaker, played by Radcliffe. The sitcom also features Bobby Moynihan, Erika Alexander, and Jalyn Hall in its ensemble, blending humour with heartfelt character arcs.
The series is set to premiere on NBC on February 23.
