Keanu Reeves may soon return as the trench coat–wearing exorcist John Constantine. Nearly two decades after the 2005 cult classic, Constantine 2 appears to finally be gaining momentum, with DC Studios co-head James Gunn acknowledging his involvement in the project’s development.

The supernatural thriller, which originally starred Reeves alongside Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, and Tilda Swinton, followed a cynical demon hunter who can see angels and demons walking the earth. While the first film received mixed reviews, it went on to achieve cult status over the years—making the demand for a sequel nearly inevitable.

In a recent conversation, James Gunn confirmed that he has discussed the project with Reeves and the original creative team, though he has not yet read a completed script. He expressed admiration for the team and hinted that the project remains alive within DC’s slate of upcoming films. This marks the first solid indication from DC leadership that Constantine 2 is indeed under development rather than stuck in creative limbo.

Keanu Reeves himself has long been vocal about his desire to return to the role. Earlier this year, he revealed that he and director Francis Lawrence had put together a story treatment and pitched it to DC Studios. The studio reportedly responded positively, allowing the pair to move forward with developing the screenplay. Reeves said they’ve been trying to make this sequel for over a decade and that he’s hopeful it will finally materialize.

The film has been in development for several years, moving at a measured pace. Reports suggest that an early draft of the script was completed in 2024, with continued revisions through 2025. With Gunn now being looped into the creative discussions, industry watchers believe DC will soon refine the script and lock in a direction for production.

Constantine 2 is expected to explore darker, more spiritual themes while expanding on the universe introduced in the first film. The original blended religious mythology, horror, and noir sensibilities into a visually striking narrative, and the sequel aims to deepen that tone while modernizing the story for today’s audience.

While no release date has been announced, the growing collaboration between Reeves, Lawrence, and Gunn signals that the long-awaited return of John Constantine might finally be within reach.
