The upcoming movie explores one of India's most well-known court cases from the late 1970s and early 1980s. The case that continues to provoke debate in Indian society regarding justice, individual convictions, and secular law is depicted in the teaser.
HAQ is a dramatised and fictionalised account of the events described in Jigna Vora's book "Bano: Bharat ki Beti." The Shah Bano case, which sparked public discussion more than 40 years ago and is still relevant today, is revisited in the movie.
Yami Gautam portrays a Muslim woman who was wronged and abandoned by her husband, who decides to fight for her rights and those of her children under Section 125. The film also features Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady.
Haq begins as a love story, and seemingly a private dispute between a husband and wife shifts to a rousing debate on a provocative topic that begs a solution even today - a courtroom battle spotlighting greater questions of faith, identity, liberalism, personal belief and eventually policy and law - the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) under article 44.
The courtroom proceedings in the film highlight broader policy matters, such as the Uniform Civil Code under Article 44 of the Constitution.
Haq is directed by Suparn S Varma and produced by Junglee Pictures in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios. The film is scheduled for release in theatres on November 7, 2025.
