Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated political action drama Jana Nayagan has hit an unexpected roadblock just days before its scheduled theatrical release. The film, slated to arrive in cinemas on January 9, is yet to receive its censor certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), prompting its makers to move the Madras High Court with an urgent plea.

The petition has been filed on behalf of KVN Productions, seeking judicial intervention to expedite the issuance of the censor certificate. According to industry sources, the court has agreed to hear the matter on priority, with the hearing scheduled for 2:15 pm following the producers’ request for immediate redressal. With release-day logistics already underway, the delay has raised concerns across the trade.

Jana Nayagan holds particular significance as it is widely being referred to as Thalapathy Vijay’s last film before his full-time entry into politics. Directed by H Vinoth, the film has been positioned as a high-stakes political action entertainer, and expectations have been sky-high since its announcement.

Reports indicate that the makers submitted the film for certification on December 18. The CBFC reportedly suggested a few modifications, which the production team accepted without delay. Despite compliance, the censor certificate has not yet been issued, creating uncertainty at a critical moment. For a film of this scale, even a short delay can disrupt release plans, including theatre allocations, publicity schedules, and audience momentum.

The impact of the delay is already visible. Advance ticket sales for Jana Nayagan have been put on hold across Tamil Nadu, leaving fans disappointed and exhibitors in a state of limbo. Adding to the congestion, Sivakarthikeyan’s upcoming release Parasakthi, scheduled for January 10, is facing a similar situation, as it too awaits CBFC certification. With two major Tamil releases stuck at the same bottleneck, the industry is closely watching how quickly the issue is resolved.

For now, all eyes are on the Madras High Court hearing. A favourable and swift decision could put Jana Nayagan back on track for its January 9 release. Any further delay, however, may force last-minute changes that could ripple across the Tamil film exhibition ecosystem, especially given the film’s scale, political undertones, and Vijay’s unparalleled fan following.
