Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming gangster drama O Romeo has cleared a significant legal hurdle just days before its scheduled release, with a Bombay civil court dismissing a bid to halt the film’s debut. The court’s decision comes amid a lawsuit that had threatened to stall the movie over claims about its content and inspirations.
The legal challenge was filed by Sanober Shaikh, daughter of the late Hussain “Ustara” Shaikh, who argued that the film portrayed her father’s life without consent and could harm his reputation. However, the court ruled in favour of the filmmakers, rejecting the plea for an injunction and allowing O Romeo to proceed toward its February 13, 2026, theatrical release as planned.
In its judgment, the court highlighted that the suit was filed very close to the release date and pointed out that a last-minute injunction would cause irreparable financial damage to the makers. The judge also noted that the film contains clear disclaimers stating it is a work of fiction, which played a part in the decision to refuse the request to stall the release.
Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, O Romeo adapts elements from Hussain Zaidi’s Mafia Queens of Mumbai, portraying a gritty underworld narrative. The ensemble cast includes Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwary, Disha Patani, Farida Jalal and Tamannaah Bhatia, adding to the film’s buzz ahead of its Valentine’s weekend launch.

The court’s clearance is seen as a relief for the team after a brief legal scare, and although the civil case continues — with the next hearing scheduled in March — the movie’s commercial and promotional plans are no longer in jeopardy. O Romeo now heads into cinemas with its release intact, poised to compete in a packed February box-office window.
