Sanober Shaikh, daughter of the late underworld figure Hussain Ustara, has taken legal action against the makers of the upcoming Bollywood film O’Romeo, seeking an order to halt its scheduled release on February 13, 2026. In a petition filed in court, Sanober has asked for both temporary and permanent injunctions to restrain producer Sajid Nadiadwala, director Vishal Bhardwaj, and author Hussain Zaidi from releasing or distributing the film in theatres, on television, or on digital platforms while the matter is pending.

The controversy erupted after the teaser and promotional material for O’Romeo, starring Shahid Kapoor, drew comparisons to Hussain Ustara — a Mumbai underworld figure. Sanober claims the film’s characterization and visuals appear to mirror her father without seeking permission from the family, effectively portraying his life story without consent. She has asked the court to appoint a commissioner to screen the film and submit a report on its content before any public release.

Sanober’s legal move comes after earlier legal notices sent in late 2025 alleging that the filmmakers used Hussain Ustara’s likeness and life events without authorisation, causing distress to the family. Her lawyer also included a demand for Rs 2 crore in compensation in notices sent to the producers, claiming the portrayal could harm her father’s reputation and disturb the family’s peace.

The O’Romeo team has responded to the dispute by stating that the film is not a biopic of Hussain Ustara and that the story is adapted from a chapter in a Hussain Zaidi book, with creative liberties taken. Director Vishal Bhardwaj and producer Sajid Nadiadwala maintain that the necessary literary rights were acquired through the source and deny any direct linkage to real individuals without legal backing.

The legal battle has already had tangible effects on the film’s promotional plans.

Reports indicate that the trailer launch and some promotional events were postponed or cancelled amid concerns over security and the ongoing dispute. As the matter unfolds in court, the potential impact on O’Romeo’s release remains uncertain, with viewers and industry insiders closely watching the outcome.
