Veteran Indian actor Rajpal Yadav has reacted to widespread attention over his earlier statement that he didn’t have money to resolve his legal troubles, saying in a recent interview that he is actually “surrounded by money” and even jokingly described himself as a “chalti-phirti cheque book” — a walking chequebook.

The comments come after the actor was released on interim bail in a long-running Rs 9-crore cheque bounce and debt case involving loan defaults linked to his film financial dealings.

Before surrendering to Tihar Jail on February 5, Yadav had made headlines when he admitted: “I don’t have money… I have to deal with this crisis on my own” while facing mounting debts and legal pressure. His emotional remarks underscored the strain he felt as the case progressed, which stems from bounced cheques connected to a loan he took to finance his 2010 film Ata Pata Laapata.

After the Delhi High Court granted him interim bail on February 17 — suspending his sentence until March 18. In the interview with NDTV, he clarified that although financial headlines have made rounds, he has contributed to the industry and helped many people earn, hence the walking cheque book label.

"I cannot comment on that just now, but I want to say that I am surrounded by money. Rajpal chalti phirti cheque book hai. I earn money, I help people earn money, and several households depend on it."

He further added, "In 2019, I left politics because I just wanted to serve my people."

The actor also expressed gratitude toward colleagues and supporters who stood by him during the controversy, including well-known figures from the film fraternity who reportedly offered both emotional and financial backing. Rajpal shared how he returned to attend family events immediately after his release, including his niece’s wedding, and acknowledged the long journey ahead in resolving the legal case fully.
