Shahid Kapoor’s new film, O’ Romeo, has begun its box office journey on a steady note. The romantic-action drama earned an estimated Rs 8.25 crore nett on its opening day in India, according to early figures revealed by industry trackers.
While not a thunderous start, it reflects a fair turnout, especially as the film heads into the Valentine’s Day weekend — a period that could work in its favour. The overall occupancy on Friday stood at 14.86 per cent, suggesting audiences are walking in, albeit cautiously.
For Shahid Kapoor, the opening carries added significance. In comparison to his recent theatrical releases, O’ Romeo has performed better on day one than Deva (Rs 5.50 crore), Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (Rs 6.70 crore) and Jersey (Rs 3.2 crore), as per Sacnilk data. That puts the film among his stronger recent starters, even if it has not stormed the box office.
Much now depends on how the weekend unfolds. Films in the romantic space often see a boost during Valentine’s week, and trade analysts believe positive word of mouth could help collections climb over Saturday and Sunday.
At the same time, audience connection will be crucial — curiosity can bring viewers in, but emotional resonance keeps the momentum alive.
Social media reactions so far have been mixed but energetic. Some viewers have described the film as a stylish entertainer with a gripping pace, applauding Shahid Kapoor’s intensity and screen presence. One enthusiastic user even labelled it a “blockbuster,” awarding it 4.5 stars and praising Kapoor’s performance alongside the supporting cast. Others, however, have expressed more measured opinions, reflecting a divided early response.
Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and also starring Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar, Avinash Tiwary, Vikrant Massey and Tamannaah Bhatia, the film blends romance with stylised action.
Produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, O’ Romeo now faces its first real test — whether it can turn a decent opening into a sustained run.
Ahead of release, Vishal Bhardwaj shared an emotional note, writing, "Before the critics speak and before the box office delivers its verdict, I feel compelled to share how deeply proud I am of this film. Before the accolades or the criticism arrive, I must thank, from the deepest part of my being, all my HODs who gave far more than was ever asked of them…"
