Actor R Madhavan, who will next be seen in Dhurandhar: The Revenge, recently opened up about taking a four-year break from films before returning to the screen with Saala Khadoos in 2016.

Reflecting on that phase, the actor admitted that he had grown disillusioned with his work and felt creatively unsatisfied.

Speaking on Unfiltered Entertainment’s YouTube talk show, Madhavan recalled a moment during the shooting of a Tamil song in Switzerland that deeply impacted him. He shared how he noticed a Swiss farmer watching the shoot with visible disdain, casually sipping tea and seemingly questioning what was happening in front of him.

“I was really offended, but then it struck me suddenly. I am literally dancing to other people’s tunes. I am a public speaker, I know how to handle a gun, fly remote planes, ride horses, I do so many things. I am showing none of it in my movies. The only thing I was trying to do was to woo the audience, which will make me a superstar. I realised the mistake I was doing.”

Madhavan went on to explain that it was his wife who first sensed his growing unhappiness with work. Recalling the conversation that pushed him to pause and reflect, he said, “One day, my wife asked me, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ She said that you are going for work like you want to come back from it. That actually made a lot of sense. So, I took a break. I wanted to understand where the country was going. I even stopped doing ad films, grew a beard, travelled a lot around Chennai and other places in India. I talked to rickshaw guys, what really matters to them, what’s the real cost of stuff that bothers them. That insight for four years is probably what I’m eating off right now.”

During this self-imposed sabbatical, the actor distanced himself from the film industry entirely, choosing instead to observe society closely and understand the realities of everyday life. He later realised that the filmmakers he had been collaborating with earlier did not share the same forward-thinking approach that he was seeking, prompting him to look for new directors and more meaningful projects.

After returning to the screen in 2016 with Saala Khadoos, Madhavan marked a significant turning point in his career by taking on unconventional and challenging roles.

His post-comeback phase saw him deliver a series of critically acclaimed performances in films such as Vikram Vedha, Shaitaan, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Kesari Chapter 2 and Dhurandhar, firmly re-establishing him as one of the most versatile actors in the industry.

Madhavan was most recently seen in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, which released in December 2025 and went on to create massive records at the box office. In the film, he played Ajay Sanyal, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, a character inspired by Ajit Doval. The film also featured Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal and Sanjay Dutt in pivotal roles, further adding to the scale and impact of the project.
