Filmmaker and producer Luv Ranjan has recently shared an update on the much-anticipated biopic of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly during an interview.
It was confirmed last year that a biopic on Sourav Ganguly is in the works, with Rajkummar Rao set to portray the former cricketer. The film is being directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced under the banner of Luv Films. Now, the producer has offered fresh insight into the film’s shooting schedule.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Luv Ranjan revealed that the team is gearing up to begin filming the Sourav Ganguly biopic in March 2026. While he refrained from sharing further details about the project, the filmmaker confirmed this early update regarding the production timeline.
Earlier reports had suggested that shooting would commence in January this year, but the producer has now clarified that filming will instead begin in March.
As per previous reports, the shoot is expected to start in Kolkata, focusing on Ganguly’s influential cricketing journey and his tenure as Indian team captain. Rajkummar Rao is reportedly undergoing rigorous preparation for the role, including learning left-handed batting, to ensure an authentic portrayal of the cricketing icon.
Reports have also indicated that the film is tentatively slated for a December 2026 release. However, neither Rajkummar Rao nor the makers have officially confirmed the release date so far.
The groundwork for the biopic has already begun, with director Vikramaditya Motwane spending four days in Kolkata to closely study Ganguly’s Behala residence. The iconic home is set to be recreated in a Mumbai studio for the film’s shoot.
On Wednesday morning, Motwane visited Ganguly’s family residence, Ma Mangal Chandi Bhavan near Behala Chowrasta, along with his team, as part of the research process.
Speaking about his biopic, Sourav Ganguly—who represented India from 1992 to 2008, scoring 18,575 runs across Tests and ODIs and registering 38 centuries—ruled out the idea of playing a leading role in the project himself.
“I think the right person is doing it… I’ll help him with everything," said the former cricketer, widely regarded as one of India’s most successful captains.
The biopic is expected to be filmed across multiple locations, including Kolkata, Mumbai, and London.
