Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar joined the nation in mourning the passing of veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, sharing heartfelt words that reflected both admiration and pride.
Remembering the legendary actor’s bond with Karnataka through the timeless classic Sholay, Shivakumar said Dharmendra’s legacy would “forever remain in people’s hearts.”
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the minister wrote, “Saddened by the passing of legendary actor Dharmendra avaru. His charisma, warmth, and unforgettable performances defined an era of Indian cinema and touched millions of hearts. From the timeless magic of Sholay, filmed in our own Ramanagara, to countless memorable roles, his legacy will forever live on. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and admirers in this difficult hour. Om Shanti.”

Speaking to PTI, Shivakumar fondly recalled how Sholay put Ramanagaram — a district in his constituency — on the global map.
“Karnataka and Bengaluru are very proud of Dharmendra. Sholay was shot in my district, in Ramanagaram… He played a major role in the movie, which was recognised nationally and internationally. We are very proud of that film. On behalf of the Government of Karnataka and myself, we pray to God. There are many followers; we still remember him…”
Known across generations as the He-Man of Bollywood, Dharmendra’s passing at 89 marks the end of an era. Over a career spanning six decades, he redefined Indian cinema with his mix of rugged strength and emotional sensitivity.
From Phool Aur Patthar and Satyakam to Seeta Aur Geeta, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, and the evergreen Sholay, his performances became the benchmark for what it meant to be a true Hindi film hero.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he transitioned effortlessly into action roles and ensemble films, continuing to rule the box office with his trademark charm. With 75 hit films as a leading man — the highest for any Hindi film actor — Dharmendra’s impact on Indian cinema remains unmatched.
