Bollywood icon Anil Kapoor recently revealed that several political parties approached him to consider a role in active politics following the release of his 2001 political drama Nayak: The Real Hero, but he turned down those offers, emphasising that he couldn’t commit to the responsibilities with the sincerity and dedication required.
In an interview discussing his long career, Anil explained that the public’s reaction to his portrayal of a common man who becomes chief minister for a day blurred the lines between reel and real life, prompting political players to see him as a potential entrant into public service.
“I don’t have it within me to give it my full commitment,” Anil said of the political overtures, noting that any genuine public role would require not just visibility but 100 per cent dedication — something he felt he couldn’t genuinely give at that stage in his life and career. He added that the interest from political quarters often came indirectly through intermediaries, and he chose to “nip it in the bud.”
Interestingly, his hesitation extended beyond politics. After gaining international attention with the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, Anil said he was approached by the United Nations to serve as a brand ambassador. However, he declined that offer as well, explaining that he did not want to treat any such position as a “photo op” and preferred to focus on roles where he could contribute meaningfully rather than symbolically.

Instead of stepping into public office or global advocacy, Anil has stayed rooted in his acting career. He is currently preparing for his next film Alpha, directed by Shiv Rawail and starring Alia Bhatt and Bobby Deol, and will also headline Subedaar, an action-drama set to premiere on Prime Video.
