Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is gearing up for another high-profile release later this year with the crime thriller Haiwaan, co-starring Saif Ali Khan and directed by Priyadarshan. In an unusual but increasingly common trend for big-budget films, Haiwaan has already recovered around 70 percent of its production cost before its theatrical release, thanks to lucrative non-theatrical rights sales, industry trackers report.

According to sources, the satellite, digital and music rights for Haiwaan were scooped up by Sony Network in a deal worth approximately Rs 80 crore, covering a significant chunk of the film’s investment. With multiple OTT players reportedly in the bidding before Sony secured the rights, the pre-release traction signals strong confidence in the film’s commercial prospects, especially given its high-concept premise and star duo.

Haiwaan marks a notable on-screen reunion for Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, and also features a cameo by acclaimed actor Mohanlal, who starred in the Malayalam original Oppam, on which Haiwaan is loosely based. The story revolves around a judge trying to protect his daughter from a violent criminal, with elements of intense thriller and action sequences shaping its narrative arc.

The ensemble cast has been expanding, with actors such as Saiyami Kher and Shriya Pilgaonkar confirmed to be part of the film, contributing to its layered character lineup. Veteran actor Asrani has also joined, bringing a blend of experience and gravitas to the project.

As of now, the makers are targeting an August 2026 release window for Haiwaan, although an official date has yet to be announced. The timing is reportedly being chosen strategically to ensure a “clean run” at theatres, avoiding clashes with other big films and capitalising on a market lull to maximise audience reach.

For Akshay, who has several releases lined up this year, including Bhoot Bangla and other projects, Haiwaan represents another opportunity to appeal to both mass and urban audiences with a blend of action, drama and star power.
