Akshay Kumar is set to make a high-profile return to Indian television as the host of the Indian adaptation of the iconic international game show Wheel of Fortune. Sony Entertainment Television has acquired the Indian format rights for the globally popular franchise, marking one of the network’s biggest non-fiction acquisitions in recent years.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the move is being seen as a strategic expansion of Sony’s long-standing game show legacy. For over 25 years, the channel has dominated the genre largely through Kaun Banega Crorepati, a knowledge-based format synonymous with Amitabh Bachchan. With Wheel of Fortune, Sony appears to be signalling a shift towards a faster, more energetic game show experience tailored to contemporary viewing habits.
Industry insiders describe the Indian version as a “desi reboot” designed to retain the core mechanics of the original format while adapting its tone and content for local audiences. The iconic spinning wheel, word puzzles, and high-stakes gameplay will remain intact. However, the show will feature Hindi and regional language variations, culturally rooted clues, and occasional celebrity special episodes to broaden its appeal across demographics.
Production is expected to begin in mid-January 2026, with Sony reportedly investing heavily in scale and presentation. The set is said to be larger-than-life, backed by immersive lighting and sound design that mirrors the grandeur of the American original. First launched in the 1970s, Wheel of Fortune has since been adapted in over 60 countries, making it one of the most successful game show formats in television history.
Akshay Kumar’s casting is being viewed as a calculated and crucial decision. Known for his energetic screen presence and mass appeal, the actor is expected to connect equally well with metro audiences and viewers in smaller towns. A source close to the production noted that Wheel of Fortune requires a host who feels instantly approachable and upbeat, qualities closely associated with Akshay’s public persona. This project marks his major return to mainstream TV hosting after earlier stints on shows such as Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi and MasterChef India.
In line with evolving consumption patterns, Sony plans a dual-platform release. The show will air in prime time on Sony Entertainment Television while also streaming simultaneously on SonyLIV via OTTplay Premium. This approach aims to bridge traditional television viewership with the rapidly growing digital audience.
The makers also intend to foreground an emotional core by spotlighting contestants from diverse social and economic backgrounds. By blending aspirational storytelling with high-energy gameplay, the network hopes Wheel of Fortune India will secure a permanent slot in its 2026 programming lineup.
