Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has once again found himself at the centre of controversy after a video clip from his upcoming film Kannappa went viral online. In the scene, Akshay is seen portraying the Hindu deity Lord Shiva, delivering a powerful monologue.
However, sharp-eyed netizens were quick to point out that the actor’s eyes seemed to be moving from left to right in an unnatural way, leading many to accuse him of reading lines from a teleprompter placed in front on him.
This incident has drawn comparisons to a similar controversy from earlier this year during the promotions of Sarfira, where Akshay was also accused of using a teleprompter. Back then, fans claimed to have noticed him glancing subtly off-screen to read his lines. While that moment sparked debate, the actor neither confirmed nor denied the allegations. Now, the Kannappa video has added more fuel to the fire.
Social media platforms have since erupted with criticism. A number of users expressed their frustration with what they see as a lack of commitment from a top-tier actor commanding hefty paychecks. “And then he brags that he needs just one day to prep for a character! He doesn’t prep—he just reads off a screen. No wonder it shows in his performances,” one user wrote. Another added, “This is unacceptable, especially when he's charging ₹100 crore per film plus a profit share. The least he can do is learn his lines.”
Critics have also raised questions about the standards of modern filmmaking, asking why directors and producers allow such practices, especially when dealing with mythological or culturally significant roles. “Why are filmmakers even okay with this?” a comment read.
Despite the growing backlash, Kumar appears unbothered. The actor continues to juggle multiple film commitments, including the recently released Housefull 5, which received mixed reviews and modest box office returns. Meanwhile, his next high-profile project, Hera Pheri 3, has been generating buzz—especially following actor Paresh Rawal’s brief departure and return to the franchise this week.
