Police in Maharashtra’s Solapur district have filed a case against 10 to 12 individuals for allegedly assaulting stand-up comedian Pranit More. The attack reportedly occurred after the group took offense to his jokes about actor Veer Pahariya.
The incident has sparked significant attention, with authorities taking swift action to investigate the matter. Pranit More, known for his humorous takes on contemporary issues, was reportedly targeted during a performance, which has raised concerns over the limits of free speech and the growing intolerance towards comedic expression. The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Veer Pahariya, the grandson of former state chief minister Sushilkumar Shinde, gained attention with his role in the recently released action drama Sky Force.
Following Pranit More’s show on Sunday, 10 to 12 individuals, angered by his jokes targeting Pahariya, allegedly assaulted the comedian, according to a police complaint filed in connection with the incident.
A statement regarding the alleged assault on Pranit More has been shared on his social media account, addressing the incident.
"...They brutally attacked him, punching and kicking him repeatedly, leaving him injured,” The statement read, on his Instagram account.
Following the post, the Solapur police summoned More to record his statement but he did not turn up, an official said on Wednesday.
After Pranit More's post about the alleged assault, the Solapur police issued a summons for him to record his statement.
However, according to an official, More did not appear to give his statement as requested on Wednesday.
The police are now likely to take further steps to ensure his cooperation in the investigation. The comedian's absence has raised questions, and authorities are continuing their efforts to resolve the matter and gather all necessary details.
