BJP has emerged as a formidable challenger to the TMC over the last few years but has not quite succeeded in dislodging Mamata in her backyard. However, it gave a tough fight to TMC in both the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and the 2021 assembly elections.

In 2024, the pressing issues of Sandeshkhali and anti-incumbency could prove a setback for the ruling TMC in West Bengal. The BJP is going full-throttle to attack the TMC with an eye on cornering a majority of the state’s 42 seats.

In 2019, Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal were conducted in all seven phases, covering different constituencies in each phase. In the previous elections, TMC won 22 out of 42 constituencies in the coastal state. BJP improved its rally from just 2 in 2014 to 18 in 2019. The Congress bagged the remaining two seats.
