Punjab is gearing up for a high-voltage contest in the upcoming assembly election, with a host of parties throwing the gauntlet for the 13 constituencies in the state.
The ruling AAP is looking to improve its seat tally in Punjab, a state where it won the assembly elections in 2022. Both Congress and AAP have mutually decided to contest the Lok Sabha elections separately, even though they have entered into seat-sharing arrangements in other states.
The Sukhbir Badal-led SAD, which once wielded considerable clout in the state, is also looking to improve its numbers after a poor performance in 2019. The BJP has also hit the campaign trail in Punjab, where it has found little success in the last few years. Both BJP and SAD were allies in the state until the latter walked out of the NDA amid the farmer stir in 2020-21.
Past results
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the Congress in Punjab won eight of the 13 Lok Sabha seats, while the SAD-BJP alliance bagged four seats and AAP managed to win just one.

Punjab has 13 Lok Sabha seats in its kitty, including Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Khadoor Sahib, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Anandpur Sahib, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Faridkot, Firozpur, Bathinda, Sangrur and Patiala.
In 2024, the "Land of Five Rivers" will see a fight between multiple parties who are set to contest individually instead of an alliance as seen in many other states.
The key parties include Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which stormed into power in the state with a landslide victory in the state elections by bagging 92 seats in the 117-member assembly, the well-established Congress as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Regional parties like Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) play an important role in the state's political landscape.
What to expect
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Aam Aadmi Party is looking to consolidate on its gains and eye a big chunk of the 13 seats in the state. Its INDIA bloc ally Congress is also looking to shore up its numbers, tapping into the farmer anger against the Centre. Both parties are optimistic about their prospects in the state, which is why they have opted out of a seat-sharing pact.
Meanwhile, BJP is trying to hard to rebuild its presence in the state amid growing farmer anger over MSP and other issues. The saffron party has not yet entered into an alliance with its former partner SAD.
