‘Freebies’ are a counter to the conventional mobilization around caste blocs, which upended national politics after the release of Mandal Commission report. However, freebies raise questions about fiscal sustainability and the trade-offs involved for economic performance. As Delhi continues to set a precedent, the debate over the merits and demerits of freebies versus caste politics is likely to shape the future of Indian democracy
9 monthsIf the BJP, with NDA partners like the Apni Party and People’s Conference, can form the government in J&K, that will be seen as a mandate in favour of the revocation of Article 370

1 yearDelhi election results: Will BJP return to the national capital after 27 years? Can Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secure a historic hattrick? Will Congress again fail to open its account or can it play the kingmaker in a clash where it appears to be a distant third? All eyes will be on the counting of votes on February 8 which will determine the winner of the tight three-way contest in Delhi. Most exit polls have predicted a BJP victory in the national capital but some have also favoured an AAP government. A few pollsters believe that Delhi will see a close contest. In the 2025 elections, AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, is aiming for a record third consecutive term, banking on its governance track record, welfare schemes, and the popularity of its supremo. The BJP put up a strong fight against AAP, seeking to sustain its winning momentum following victories in Haryana and Maharashtra. Out of power in Delhi for over 25 years, the saffron party mounted an aggressive campaign to unseat Kejriwal, challenging AAP’s claims of honesty and portraying the chief minister as corrupt. The Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years until 2013, is also striving for a much-needed comeback after failing to win a single seat in the last two assembly elections. The campaigning saw a high-voltage battle between the three main contenders. The discourse was marked by sharp attacks, AI-generated spoofs, and debates over issues such as the "Sheesh Mahal" controversy, Yamuna's water quality, and allegations of voter list tampering. While governance, law and order, and women's welfare were central themes, promises of freebies dominated the pre-poll narrative. In the 2020 Delhi elections, AAP won a landslide victory, securing 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP managed just eight. Kejriwal’s party also garnered an impressive 53.57% vote share, with the BJP securing 38.51%. The Congress, meanwhile, failed to open its account in the last two assembly polls.
