Schools, colleges, and other educational institutions in six sub-divisions of Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, have been ordered shut today, August 6 due to continuous heavy rainfall and a weather warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the IMD, light to moderate rainfall is expected across most parts of Himachal Pradesh, with a few spells of intense to very intense rainfall likely in the districts of Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Mandi within the next few hours. Rainfall is also expected in other districts including Chamba, Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Lahul and Spiti, Kinnaur, and Kullu.

As a precautionary measure, authorities have directed the closure of all government and private schools, colleges, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), and Anganwadis in Chopal, Kumarsain, Rampur, Sunni, Jubbal, and Theog sub-divisions of Shimla district. The orders were issued under the Disaster Management Act to ensure the safety of children and staff and to avoid any untoward incidents.

In five sub-divisions, Chopal, Kumarsain, Rampur, Sunni, and Jubbal officials responded to continuous rainfall that began around midnight. In Theog, educational institutions were closed following heavy rainfall throughout the night. Staff members in affected institutions have been asked to follow government directions already in place.

In other districts such as Solan and Sirmaur, local authorities are taking similar action, depending on conditions in their respective areas.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway continues to remain closed due to heavy rain and landslides between Mandi and Kullu.

A report released by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) states that from 20 June to 5 August 2025, Himachal Pradesh has recorded 194 deaths and estimated losses of over Rs 1,85,251.98 lakh. Out of the total deaths, 108 were due to rain related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and building collapses.
