There has been a rapid increase in the number of Indian students pursuing education abroad, aided by various scholarships on offer. According to the latest government figures, more than 13 lakh students were studying outside India in 2024.
Canada hosted the highest number of students followed by the US, the UK and Australia. Various scholarships are available throughout the year for students looking for opportunities overseas.
Here’s a list of scholarships which are nearing their deadline:
Prodigy Finance’s $5,000 scholarship
Prodigy Finance has announced its scholarship programme offering $5,000 to support students starting their higher education abroad in Spring 2025.
Students are advised to submit their application by September 30, 2024 at 8 am EST. The names of the selected applicants will be announced on October 15.

To complete the application, candidates have to answer essay-type questions that discuss their vision for creating a positive change in their community and how they plan to achieve this goal. A panel of judges The will evaluate the responses to pick the winners.
Commonwealth Master’s scholarship
Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships are for candidates from eligible low and middle-income Commonwealth countries to undertake full-time taught master’s study at a UK university.
The scholarship will provide airfare from the scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of the award. Full fees are covered by an agreement between the CSC and the UK university and scholars are not liable to pay any part of the tuition fee.
The scholars will also be eligible for a stipend (living allowance) of £1,378 a month, or £1,690 a month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at current levels).

Applications for the 2025-26 academic year are now open. The deadline for applying is 4 PM BST on October 15. The scholarships are for study in the UK beginning in September-October 2025.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are international masters, jointly designed and delivered by a group of higher education institutions. They involve at least three institutions from at least three different countries and multiple associated partners from the academic and non-academic worlds.
It may also offer full scholarships to the “best-ranked students” worldwide. Scholarships cover the participation costs and contribute to travel, visa, and a living allowance.
Candidates are advised to submit their application between October and January for courses starting the following academic year.
Inlaks scholarship
Inlaks scholarships are awarded across a wide range of subjects to young Indian graduates, enabling overseas study in institutions of their choice across the United Kingdom Europe and the United States of America.
The value of the scholarship depends on the course and covers tuition fees, living expenses, one-way travel, and health allowance, up to $100,000. Applications for 2025 will now open in February. The duration of the course can be between nine months to four years.

Applicants having a postgraduate qualification — master’s or PhD — from an institution abroad are not eligible. Applicants who are already studying or have started their postgraduate education at an institution abroad, too, are not eligible to apply.
The JN Tata Endowment
Offered by Tata Group, the JN Tata Endowment awards merit-based loan scholarships to students across India for higher studies overseas. The loan scholarship is offered at a simple interest of 2 percent per annum but trustees may at their discretion grant any exemption or rebate in the payment of interest by any candidate.
The scholarship is awarded for full-time postgraduate / PhD / postdoctoral studies overseas, across all disciplines are driven by defined eligibility criteria and a selection process. In the recent past, the loan scholarship amounts have ranged between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 10 lakh.
Application forms for the JN Tata Endowment are usually available from January.
